Earlier this week, we attended the launch of 23-year-old Mumbai rapper Enkore’s debut album Libra Scale. I’ve featured Enkore’s music in the Weekly Playlist before and I really think he’s a talent to watch out for.
The launch of the album also featured performances by acts including Divine, Poetik Justis, D’evil, Kav-E, DeeMC, DJ Sinista and DJ Proof. It was our first experience of the Mumbai hip-hop ‘scene’ (I hate that term, but it does the job) and I was really impressed with how they run things. The performers are enthusiastic, energetic and fully committed, the audience is not shy – there were some serious moves on the dance floor – and the interaction between the two appears to be based on shared life experiences and stories. Amidst the swagger and the shoutouts are mentions of dreams, goals, struggle and fight – no one is afraid to be earnest. I can really respect that. The energy is collective and I felt a real sense of community from my back-of-the-room vantage point. I’m not a big dancer but I couldn’t stay still even though I had a heavy backpack on for most of the evening. My legs complained the next morning.
Elvis in the mean time took these beautiful photos of the gig.
