Tracy Chapman and Eric Clapton – Give Me One Reason
When this song first came out, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Now I’m older and wiser and it sounds so good.
Shania Twain – If You’re Not In It For Love (I’m Outta Here)
Producer Mutt Lange dresses this one up with all the frills of an arena rock song – a big drum section, crunchy guitars and riffs all around. Strip it down to guitar and bass, slow it down a fair bit and it’s a blues song out and out.
Outlandish – Rock All Day
Danish trio Outlandish told me, when I interviewed them in 2009, that this is at its core a blues song.
John Mayer – Gravity
John Mayer. Enough said.
Nancy Sinatra – Kind of A Woman
This was one of two fun songs I heard at a fashion show this week. Ladies, this is how you do ‘attitude’.
Madeleine Peyroux – Changing All Those Changes
This Buddy Holly cover was the second cool song I discovered at fashion week.
I thought I was just skimming the surface with the songs I’d included, so I asked guitarist Warren Mendonsa aka Blackstratblues to add to the list. Here is what he sent me:
Sting feat. Eric Clapton – It’s Probably Me
The Eagles – I Can’t Tell You Why
Stone Temple Pilots – Big Empty (MTV Unplugged)
Golden Earring – Radar Love
Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic
