The Weekly Playlist - Karol Conka

Karol Conka – Boa Noite
Let’s kick off the week with some hip-hop from Brazil! MC Karol Conka raps over a hypnotic percussive beat. Frankly, this is better than any of the official World Cup songs that played during the last month. In this interview with Rookie Mag, Conka says, “I wanted this music to be my business card. I wanted to show my potential to be one of the representatives of the Brazilian rap.” We think she’s made a fine case for herself. Look forward to hearing more from this young artist.

Gary Clark Jr – Please Come Home feat Alice Smith

OneSmallWindow favourite Gary Clark Jr pulls off a blistering guitar solo even in this mellow song – which is just so beautiful with what I can only describe as having “an old-timey feel”. The song introduces me to vocalist Alice Smith and I’m an instant fan. She sounds flawless on this one.

Cee Lo Green – Bright Lights Bigger City
This was one of the many fun pop songs I discovered in the movie Pitch Perfect. The vocal arrangements make all the songs featured in the movie sound incredible, so much so that the originals sometimes feel weak. Not in this case. In the film this song was a mash-up with another song which is the next one in our list.

B.o.B – Magic
This song, featuring Weezer’s River Cuomo, has the kind of vocal riff that will stick in your head. Check it out and then listen to the mash-up with the CeeLo Green song. Or just watch all of Pitch Perfect again. You know you want to.

Eminem – Like Toy Soldiers
Eminem doing his thing over a melodic sample – I’ll never tire of that.
