James Bay – Best Fake Smile
Grammy Nominee James Bay turns it up with this one. Hand claps, guitar stabs, a big chorus? You’ve got my attention! Also, the kid in the video is a cool character.
Mike Posner – I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)
I can’t get this song out of my head. Posner does an excellent job of painting a mellow picture against a backdrop of intense partying. This remix also makes the song sound huge. I mean literally. On headphones the sound fills your brain in a big spacey way. On repeat.
Brothers Osborne – Stay A Little Longer
When the song kicks in, it’s so pretty! I’ve got this one on repeat.
Honne – Loves The Jobs You Hate
I featured this song on the playlist in January and this is what I said at the time: “I’ve just discovered British duo Honne and I foresee them finding a permanent spot on my favourites list”. Eleven months later this holds true.
John Mayer – Love On The Weekend
John Mayer is a smart guy. His first new song in over three years is not a ‘look-at-me-I’m-such-a-virtuoso’ bag of flashy tricks, instead it’s a quiet invitation to explore the results of the musical journey he’s been on over the years. It hits all my sweet spots – is that country music you hear in the excellent phrasing – and I can’t wait for more new music in 2017.
Rae Sreemmurd feat. Gucci Mane – Black Beatles
I was totally not expecting this song to sound like this! What is this awesome vibe? On repeat.
Kanye West – Real Friends (JZAC Remix)
If you’re not listening to Kanye’s music because of all the BS surrounding him in the media, you’re missing out.
Lee Brice – A Woman Like You
Singer/songwriter Lee Brice does some nifty things with the storytelling here. It could have been cheesy, but it has just the right amount of snap to make it not so.
Birdy – Young Blood (The Naked And Famous cover)
Okay, this was a pretty great song to begin with and British artist Birdy takes it to the next level in this stripped down piano cover. On repeat, this one.
Fitz and The Tantrums – HandClap
Just discovered this. Stuck in my head. I don’t need to say anything more. Listen for yourself if you haven’t already.
Louis Berry – Restless
I went from not knowing who Louis Berry was to wanting to know all about his music before this song was even half done. Listen to this one on headphones. It sounds so big and warm. Love it!
The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey – Closer
Absolutely my favourite guilty pleasure this week. I am not ashamed to admit I have this on repeat.
Trevor Hall – Still Water (Live from California Roots 2015)
This one is chill and super emotional at the same time. Then comes the spoken word/rap section. All kinds of awesome.
Blake Shelton – Friends (The Angry Birds Movie OST)
I really like this song and video. Not ironically, not as a guilty pleasure, but properly. It’s uptempo, has a big chorus and the video features all the lovely birds from the movie. What’s not to like?
Joseph Arthur – I Miss The Zoo
Be sure to listen to the live version of this song at the end of the WTF episode.
Gregory Porter – Holding On (Billboard 1 Mic 1 Take)
Love love love how this sounds.
Bear’s Den – Dew On The Vine
Love the song, the voice and the vibe.
Bronze Radio Return – Light Me Up
My favourite kind of chorus – big and driving.
Seal x Gallant – Weight In Gold
It takes a brave man to sing alongside Seal and Gallant comes through with flying colours on this excellent track. This is the first time I’ve encountered him and I’m very impressed and curious to know more.
Coldplay – Up & Up
Director Vania Heymann, whose work we’ve featured on the site before, gives Coldplay a video finally worth raving about. You have to watch it from start to end, it’s breathtaking. Good song too.
