It is called Thor: The Dark World but I am happy to report that it doesn’t play as stuffy and theatrical as its predecessor.
This is is obviously the post-New York universe so references are made to the events that played out in the Avengers movie while Thor (Chris Hemsworth) — with the help of Jane (Natalie Portman), Darcy (Kat Dennings), and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) — attempts to defeat a dark elf named Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) from using something called the Ether to destroy all the worlds (including Asgard) and sending the universe into something resembling the inside of a black hole.
This involves many battles that look like sequences we’ve seen before in movies like Gladiator and 300, as well as action sequences and cityscapes from the last Star Wars trilogy. There is even a Captain America (Chris Evans) cameo. As usual it looks like Tom Hiddleston as the ever-present, undefeatable, Loki is the only one who’s having fun with his role.
Final Analysis: The movie is a bit overlong and it has a ‘been there, done that’ feel to it.
My Advice: Catch it if it happens to be playing on a TV near you, or if you are a Marvel Universe completist.
