American Pie. Remember that movie? I do, a little. And now there is the seemingly mandatory original cast reunion called, what else, American Reunion. I suppose it would be just plain cynical to term this a cash-grab movie but the thought does cross one’s mind when one realizes that these guys are going back to their home town for the 13th year anniversary of their high school graduation. Seriously, who does that; even in the movies?

But they are all back, Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Oz (Chris Klein) and Heather (Mena Suvari), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Vicky (Tara Reid), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and of course Stifler (Sean William Scott). Along with Stifler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) and Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy) and a bunch of new characters who just serve as foils for the original Pie gang to relive old times.

Is it raunchy? Erm…yeah I guess so. But also, not really.

Way back in 1999, when Jim accidentally live-streamed his woefully inept seduction of Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) to the entire school, the web was not (yet) a well-stocked source for such eyeball-melting smut that the original movie’s shenanigans seemed tame in comparison. This is 2012 and the webcam is no longer just a means for grandma and grandpa to see pixelated images of their grandkids anymore. Hell potential cast members of future editions of this franchise have already starred in videos that far outstrip (pun intended) anything ever seen in these movies.

So this movie really becomes a means for the characters to work through their issues.  And the tried and true message is: Yes things are not the way we dreamed but we could have all been a lot worse off.

This one is really for completists only. And also for those people wanting to figure out how many of the original cast members the filmmakers were able to bring back for this reunion.
