Make Something: Happy 2013

It was a new day, a new year, and I was very motivated to make something new today.

I would like to create something new every day but I don’t know how realistic that goal is, still I wanted to have something to show for the first day of 2013. And, in the spirit of sharing, here is my process breakdown:

The Graphic:
The image up top, at the beginning of this post, was the first piece of the puzzle. It is an illustration I made using Flash. I’ve used Flash as an illustration tool for so long that I am ashamed to admit that I don’t really know my way around Adobe Illustrator.

The fonts I used are Mission Script and Blanch.

The Background:
When I was satisfied with the graphic I dug through my archives for a photograph to use as the background. The picture I settled on was taken on a location recce for a wedding we were filming in December 2012.

Why a coconut tree? No reason except that I liked the way the branches were radiating outwards–especially after the picture was cropped tight enough.

Putting It Together:
As you can see below the graphic is no longer black. I inverted the colour, laid it over the cropped photograph and played around with the Curves adjustment in Photoshop until I was satisfied with the look of this image.

It is probably fine at this stage but I wanted to go deeper. So I sent it to my iPad and opened it up in Snapseed.

Finishing Touches:
When I was done, this is what the final image looked like.

The objective was to create a ‘vintage’ style image. I am pretty pleased with what I got out of spending a couple of hours with this project. Enough to want to make more of these in the future.

What do you think?
