Inspired by the Nails

When you set out to write a short story a day for an entire year, one of the questions you don’t stop to consider is, “where am I going to find the inspiration from?”

Perhaps I should have…

Ah well, too late for that now.

So I troll the internet, newspapers, newspaper websites and back issues of magazines (like Rolling Stone) for inspiration. Sometimes it’s a phrase; some times it’s a character in a story and sometimes its gossip I’ve heard.

Sometimes I just put fingers to keyboard and start typing.

Over the past seven days I’ve written stories inspired by a single source. It is a band called Nine Inch Nails (some of you’ve probably heard of it :o)) and specifically their new album Year Zero. I haven’t heard all of it yet, just two tracks, and both of them are killer. So I decided to be inspired by song titles off the album. Is that a funny statement, decided to be inspired? It might be but it’s true ‘cause that’s what I did. The results are available for anyone who cares to mosey on over to 365Fiction and see what the mind of Trent Reznor hath wrought (in spirit at the very least).

Like I said, I haven’t heard the album so the content of the stories is all me, obliquely inspired by the title I was working with, on any given day.

I’d love to know what any of you does to be inspired when a task looms large.

So don’t be shy, leave a comment or two. In the meantime, good luck with the creating.
